Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
In Australia, 1 in 6 seniors experience some form of abuse – often at the hands of a family member.
Elder abuse is defined as a single, or repeated, act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust and which causes harm or distress to an older person.
Abuse can take various forms, including:
– Financial
– Physical
– Psychological
– Emotional
– Sexual
– Neglect
No older person should be subjected to any form of abuse.
Sadly, people with poor physical or psychological health, and higher levels of social isolation are more likely to experience elder abuse.
If you are experiencing abuse, or are concerned about a family member, please call 1800 ELDERHelp (1800 353 374) for support and advice.
