Today is Wear it Purple Day.
Founded in 2010, Wear it Purple Day is celebrated on the last Friday of August as an expression of support, and acceptance, of rainbow young people.
Tragically, the day was created in response to global stories of real teenagers, their heartache, and their very real responses – including self-harm and suicide – to the bullying and harassment resulting from a lack of acceptance of their sexuality or gender identity.
Wear it Purple was established to show young people across the globe that there is hope, people who support and accept them, and that they have the right to be proud of who they are.
Today, 14 years later, the message remains the same: Everybody has the right to be proud of who they are.
