Constantly striving to stay atop the latest techniques, our care providers including Registered, Enrolled, and Endorsed Enrolled Nurses, Healthcare Workers, Lifestyle, and Environment staff recently participated in dementia training.
Delivered by Dementia Australia Dementia specialist Alma Ries, the “Applying a problem-solving approach to behaviours” training looked at recognising the early signs of changed behaviours and understanding the contributing factors of dementia, confidently identifying and reducing risks associated with dementia and changed behaviours, and applying a person-centred approach to changed behaviours in residents.
Focusing on person-centred care, knowing our residents’ stories and acknowledging their feelings, and how our behaviour can affect the person with dementia, the training also included several case studies and some interactive group work.
For RNH, training our teams not only enhances their skills and knowledge but also results in a lessened risk of severe outcomes for behaviours, a happier workforce with less staff turnover, staff who take a systematic, problem-solving approach to changed behaviours, and a team who communicate well while also following procedures for reporting changed behaviours.
Staff comments about the training included:
“The day was very beneficial”
“I feel more confident in working with people with dementia”
