Warracknabeal Cancer Support Nurse Karen Miller and Associate Nurse Unit Manager Carol Miller joined hundreds of participants in walking 35 kilometres to raise funds for Mitochondrial Disease during The Bloody Long Walk on October 19.
Mitochondrial Disease is a genetic disorder that 1 in 5000 people experience and which robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure. It can affect anyone at any age.
Walking from Sorrento to Marthers Cove, the pair found the first 5-7km quite hilly, but enjoyed the cool and slightly windy conditions as they walked through bushland, and on and along the beach.
Walkers were offered fruit and water every 5-6km with a sausage in bread their reward for making it to the 20km point.
Largely enjoying the walk, Karen said she suffered a few blisters, but that the event was “great fun and a challenge”.
And, they’re already planning on doing another walk next year – the Adelaide Bloody Long Walk.
Well done.
