It’s cold, it’s wet, it’s dark….the winter months can certainly make it hard to find motivation to exercise, but getting active is vital for keeping coronary heart disease and other diseases at bay.
Our Exercise Physiologists recommend the following tips to get moving this winter:
- Take regular exercise breaks throughout the day: step away from your computer or tv every 30 minutes, spend 15 minutes vigorously tidying an area in your home, or spend time playing with your pets.
- Climb the stairs: they’re easy and accessible and, if you go up and down a few times, you can work up a sweat.
- Layer up: If heading outdoors to exercise, rug up to start with then shed the layers as you warm up. Remember to pay special attention to your shoes and ensure they have good grip to avoid slipping on wet surfaces.
- Protect your head and hands: Your body loses heat through its extremities so be sure to wear a beanie or warm hat and gloves.
