What is YCHANGe and why should you care?
For the past few years, Yarriambiack Shire has been gaining attention from public health experts for the wrong reasons. Our region has one of the highest rate of overweight and obese people in Victoria and this has a big impact on the health of our community and the future of our children!
Maintaining a healthy weight is an important part of staying healthy but losing weight is often hard to do and there are a lot of environmental factors that limit our health opportunities.
How do you eat healthy when your favourite café or school canteen serves mostly unhealthy food? How do you exercise more when there are limited walking tracks or footpaths? How are you supposed to be active when you work 40 hours a week in an office? How do you feed your family a healthy meal when you don’t know much about nutrition?
To help provide solutions to these issues, representatives from Rural Northwest Health, Yarriambiack Shire Council, West Wimmera Health Services and Deakin University established YCHANGe in June 2015. YCHANGe stands for Yarriambiack – Creating Healthy Active Nourished Generations.
YCHANGe is working behind the scenes to provide a healthier environment for you and your family. The project focuses on eight priority areas to create more opportunities to ‘make the healthy choice the easy choice’!
We need you! Help YCHANGe make a change!
The work of YCHANGe can only have an impact if the Yarriambiack community supports it. If you care about creating healthy environments for our community now and in the future, we’d love for you to get involved. An easy way to get involved is by joining a working group in your local area.
